Some folks I know get up to some pretty neat stuff. Such is the case with fellow webcomicker Jamie Noguchi, artist of Erfworld. He’s begun an illustration tutorials site called Monster Cutie that’s much awesome. Last week he posted an hour long digital painting tutorial and I figured I’d follow along and do my best to follow the instructions.
This reflects the first 14 minutes or so of the tutorial, with Jamie’s monster on the left, and my attempt at digital painting on the right. It took me about an hour to get to this point, as I would play the video, watch, pause it, switch to Photoshop, and mimic what I just learned. My goal was to spend an evening and do it this way, then record my own attempts at doing it on my own all by myself afterward. The evening had other plans, and I only got this far.
Soon I’m going to finish the tutorial and I’ll share what I’ve drawn. After that I will absolutely make my own video of my botching an unassisted attempt at recreating it all. I foresee it turning out better than I’d originally thought, actually. You see, I’m a terrible artist, and for me to produce what you see above speaks volumes about the quality of instruction you’re going to get out of Monster Cutie. It isn’t the same monster, no, but it’s a crap ton better than I expected out of myself. So check it out and get your digital painting on!
