Howdy Systemics

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Welcome to anyone coming in from The System. This show’s just gotten started, and the next comic posts Wednesday at 9am eastern. It occurs to me that any visitors coming here via the guest comic find me in the middle of what’s somewhat a downer. Have no fear, for things pick up next week with the silly again when we introduce some new characters.

Come back on Fridays for what I’m hoping will be creative photos of amu’s amigurumi, and keep your eyes peeled for updates on when you may be able to pick up your very own Ninja doll. We hope you continue to check out the comic in the future, and also that you enjoy yourself as you do so.  Thanks for stopping by.

I’m always thinking of ways to communicate with readers, and I thought that one way we can facilitate that communication is by playing a game. Let’s play Spot-A-Ninja! Send in photos of ninjas hiding (whether it be you in a ninja costume, a toy or plush ninja out and about, or ninja related items out in the wild), or links to ninja related stuff. Anything you send I’ll post, and will toss you a shout out in the process. Let’s work and see how many ninjas we can find!

I’ll start off with one of the webcomics I’ve been enjoying lately.

I spotted Ninja Bunny, an adorable comic with incredible style. The backgrounds have a very traditional Japanese woodblock print feel to them that reminds me a lot of Hokusai. Amu and I were very lucky to have seen an exhibit on Hokusai’s work in DC a few years back during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which is coming up again in about a month.

Let’s find out what Ninja stuff YOU can find!

Send all Ninja Spottings to: spotaninja at gmail dot com.

And a hearty “PLEASE DON’T KILL ME” to Ross from The System comic, who’s System in the Wild feature was the inspiration behind this endeavor.

A Comic About Ninjas

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I can’t say enough how big a fan I am of webcomic buddy Rosscott’s comic The System. I could go on about it, but mainly I’ll link it. The System hits comic #200 tomorrow, which is awesome. His comic for today is about ninjas, and portrays exactly the trouble people have believing Juan’s claims that Ecuador is full of them.

As mentioned earlier this week, Super Art Fight 6 is happening very soon (2 days soon as of this writing) and I’m pretty psyched. When talking about the event a lot of people highlight the artists. Some folks talk about the live music. Today I want to give a little credit to another part of what makes this show so amazing. Hilarious commentary.

Above we have Ross Nover (The System) and Marty Day (Blast-o-Rama), the awesome bastards behind the live commentary that goes on during the art battles. I can honestly say that watching these artists tackle the randomly selected topics from the Wheel Of Death is fun enough. It really is. These artists are clever, and talented and FAST! But what kicks it up a few notches is the witty banter of Marty and Ross. There’s art happening, and a DJ spinning music, and these two guys wrangle up that sensory overload and thread it together with good humor. It also gives a voice to what’s otherwise purely visual entertainment.

As staff photographer for the Super Art Fight show (I still have no idea how that happened) I got to take roster portraits at SAF5. Having taken the portraits myself, and exemplifying the “own worst critic” trait, I immediately see at least a dozen ways I could have made those shots better. I’m told they’re alright though, and I’m in no position of authority to argue. I get to do it all again this Saturday. So very psyched!
