This Is A Tribute

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

So it appears I’m not as up to scratch on gaming news as I may have thought. Seems some news slipped by me and now I’m late to the game. This is odd, because not only is it one of Amu’s favorite franchises, but we’ve got an homage character from the game in the strip

Katamari Damacy Tribute will be making its way to the PS3, umm, sometime. I remember when we first heard about the game on G4’s Pulse (I think) back before Kevin Pereira went from cool, witty, dorky guy to smarmy, trendy, frat-like guy. He’s still one of the better things on that horrid, SpikeTV Junior channel (sorry, that’s pretty much what G4’s become), but we liked him better prior to the ‘cool guy’ ego.

At any rate, we’ll be keeping an eye on this as it gets closer to release, and if I’m lucky I’ll have a PS3 by then.

Yesterday I found out that Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, passed away on Tuesday evening. It hit home, and I was forced to go over how important this game was to my youth. Specifically, it helped me survive the more tortuous adolescent years. This is the second time I’ve had to go through this.

Almost exactly one year ago the other creator of D&D, Gary Gygax, passed on. That hit me hard. I owe these two men more than a ‘thank you.’ I owe them more than my sorrow, my sympaties, and my tears. I am who I am today because of D&D. I’m a grounded individual today because of D&D. I honestly can’t say where I’d be if it weren’t for the outlet this game gave me to overcome some of the most trying and troubling times of my life.

Last year I took a tribute photo for Gary Gygax. This year, I make today’s Photo Phriday my tribute to Dave Arneson. Keep on playing, Dungeon Master. And make them 20’s, because THIS IS HOW WE ROLL.

Our original intent when planning for Amu’s World was to have lots of cameos. We had plans for several recognizable characters to show up on a semi-frequent basis. Real life’s had other plans for us, unfortunately, and we’ve been relegated to using the one.

Amu started out making the Katamari Damacy prince at conventions. It started as an experiment for fun and turned into the thing people look for when we do shows. It’s been a while since he’s been seen, so I’m dedicating this Photo Phriday to the little guy that kind of started it all.
