Quite The Trek

Monday, May 11th, 2009

I’ve never been a Star Trek fan. Just haven’t. I’m familiar with the various series titles and have a fair understanding the gist of each, but I’ve never sat down to watch a Star Trek episode on television, vhs, or dvd ever. It doesn’t help that I’d spent most of my youth in a Star Trek vs. Star Wars state of fandom. I made my choice, and my team had red lightsabers.

This dichotomy between two important and significant sci-fi franchises went a few notches towards dissolving this weekend when I watched the new Star Trek movie. If this is a sign of what’s in store for Star Trek, I could possibly become a Trekkie. Really.

I won’t break down my thoughts and give a full review of the film because I’m not terribly good at that sort of thing, but I’ll say that the focus on character development, and the rivalry/friendship between Kirk and Spock won me over. Some old school Trek fans lamented the lack of faux science techno babble that’s a staple of the franchise, but I’m glad for its omission. At least in this first film I am. There’s plenty of time for trans-warp sub configulabotomy crystal/gem fabritilations in subsequent films. this first one HAD to be about character.

See this movie. If you’ve ever heard of Star Trek I’d urge you to see this film. It’s enough canon to appease the die-hards and it’s fresh enough to convert people who were never Trek fans. I know it’s done that for me, and I know I’m not alone.
