Frontalot Saves Vs. Poison

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Bad habits are hard to break. Shoot, habits PERIOD are hard to break. Some are harder than others, and I hear smoking’s just about the top of the list. Wouldn’t know personally, as I’ve never smoked. Any bad habit I HAVE quit, I’ve generally done cold turkey. Easier for me to not do it than to ween. I’m not a weener.

This said, perhaps if I had some awesomely nerdy and fun gaming mechanic for weeing myself off an addiction. What’s that? MC Frontalot has devised JUST such a mechanic? Sweet crap nugget! That’s so convenient.

Detailed in THIS BLOG POST, MC Frontalot notes his system for quitting smoking designed with a hardcore pen and paper gamer’s sensibilities in mind. So whether you’re trying to quit smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, slapping random children, or anything at all just have a d20 with you and remember to roll high. Nat 20’s all up in this business.

Re: Hats Off To You

Confession time. The characters in Amu’s World, or groups of them at any rate, are based off of some pretty classic references. As loosely as these references are, I keep in mind the general theme of the source material and try not to be too accurate so as to rip anything off. Today’s comic kind of lets a portion of the cat out of the bag. Maybe the solar plexus. (Don Gato, anyone?)

If you can guess the classic television archetypes I keep in mind for the characters when making the comic shoot me an e-mail and let me know. I’m very curious to know how much of it I’m showing in the comic.

Photo Phriday 22 – Late Again

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

So it’s Friday somewhere, right? RIGHT? Had a very busy few days and didn’t get the chance to sit down to plan out a photo for this Friday. Went ahead and banged one out just now.

Kaizoku’s a shady character, sure, but this is a little extreme…and cliche!

Re: Juan Club To Rule Them All

Today marks a day I wasn’t sure would ever come. Amu’s World is officially half a year old. Now this isn’t remotely close to a great milestone, especially for a weekly comic, but having said that it’s further than I thought I’d ever take it. This is one of the longest running projects I’ve ever endeavored to start. That I’ve continued and haven’t missed an update in 6 months is nothing short of incredible.

Now that we’ve hit this mark, and I’ve proven to myself that I can keep this thing going, it’s time to sit down and work out how to take this seriously. I have a blast doing the comic, I really do. It’s a tremendous amount of fun, but I’m not putting quite as much of myself into it as I could be. Today’s comic marks the goal I set for myself to meet to prove I’m ready to take things to the next level.

In the coming weeks look for some changes to the site, new features and content, and a stronger focus on building a community here for folks stumbling into the comic who for some strange reason enjoy it and keep coming back. The diaper is off, and we’re breaking out the Pull-Ups.

Photo Phriday 23 – The Last Late One

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I swear, this will be the last late Photo Phriday. At least for a while at any rate. As excuse-ish as this sounds, I had an audition for some amateur voice work on Friday that ate up my time at the end of the week and it slipped my mind. Amu reminded me today that I hadn’t done a photo this week. OH NO!

The Chicken Dance is pretty funny, and I guess pretty fun if you are the Type-A extrovert that does that sort of thing. I’d been known in my more youthful days to go out and do some pretty embarrassing random stuff, but never have I done the chicken dance. True story.

Spikey F-List

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

It isn’t often I consider the Celebrity F-List. It generally only pops in my brain when someone else mentions it, and then I am forced to stop, remember who was on it, evaluate and consider the status of the ‘elite’ (yeah, right) members of said list and revise. I don’t have it printed or listed anywhere, and I certainly don’t have it laminated.

I was forced into this ritual again just today by a local-ish webcomicker who I read and who has been friendly and helpful as I try and poke along with getting my own little comic going. Aulix is the creator of the webcomic The Glass Urchin. It’s a sort of biographical webcomic with an adorable twist. All characters, who I assume are actual people, are represented by cute animals. Aulix, herself, is represented by a hedgehog.

Incidentally, Amu is a gigantic fan of hedgehogs. In fact, Dylan, Amu’s first and favorite Blythe doll, wears this hedgehog dress all the time. So cute! Also, while you’re checking out The Glass Urchin, which you should absolutely do, be sure you look at this strip on the love of comics. It’s adorable, authentic, and so very true.

Oh, and my celebrity F-List? Yeah, that’s a secret.

Re: Hidalgo Cometh

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I’ve been wanting to name the alpaca for a while. I’d been flip-flopping between a couple of names but decided that Hidalgo is the one. Today’s comic is essentially all about naming him. I giant combat alpaca can honestly have no other name. He is now officially part of the cast.

And speaking of the cast, I vaguely remember promising a cast page quite some time ago. I’ll actually be getting to that finally sometime this weekend. Be sure to check back early next week to see who’s who in Amu’s World.
